Lenders in the 2020s – Product Specialist or Business Advisor? –

“Lenders” today are primarily “senior bank debt product specialists” — risk-assessing cash dispensers who view deposits, treasury management and other services as secondary to the mission. As AI applications become more capable and lending products more commoditized, lenders’ traditional loan origination roles will become less valuable. What value beyond their product specialty should lenders be prepared to provide in client relationships? How can senior lenders define, develop and deploy an extended lender role that builds on strong credit acumen and generates more revenue?
